Interviews, offers and background checks: questions to ask

Prepare evidence for the interview, compare the complete offer and record any conditions before making a decision.

Prepared 3 October 2026 · General preparation, with location-specific reference details below.

Gather these facts

  • The advert, interview format, interviewer contact and examples from your application.
  • The offer and its revisions: employer, duties, location, pay, hours, start date and conditions.
  • Screening consent, provider details, notices, reports you receive and response dates.

How do I prepare an answer without memorising a script?

Pick a few examples tied to the role. Explain the situation, your task, what you personally did and the result. Practise a short version, then identify what you would explain if asked for detail. Ask how performance is measured, what a normal week looks like and what happens next. Separate your expected pay from factual past income; label fixed salary, bonus and total compensation consistently. If you need an accessible interview arrangement, discuss the practical requirement with the recruiter through the appropriate channel.

Can I rely on a verbal offer or resign from my current job?

Request written terms and identify unresolved checks or approvals. Compare fixed pay with variable pay, hours, location, benefits, probation, notice and restrictions. A “yes” in a conversation does not tell you whether conditions remain; the legal effect of an offer depends on the jurisdiction and wording. Before an irreversible step such as resigning or moving, confirm which conditions have cleared and the start arrangements. A written offer still cannot eliminate every risk.

An offer is withdrawn or a background report is wrong—what do I keep?

Ask for the stated reason, the decision date and any correction or review route. Save the offer, conditions, report and your responses. In the United States, FTC guidance describes permission and notice rights when an employer uses a background reporting company; check local rules and the exact process. Elsewhere, verify local screening and privacy rules. Correct a disputed record with the appropriate provider rather than sending identity documents widely. These facts help an adviser assess options; they do not prove a claim by themselves.

A worked example

Preparation example: an offer says “subject to references” and gives a start date. Ask which reference is pending, who confirms clearance and whether the date is confirmed. Keep the answer with the offer rather than treating the date as proof that screening has finished.
