Compare an occupation and a place

Job Bank’s wage tool lets you research occupations and locations. A job title alone can describe different work, so a reported range is not a guaranteed offer. This research is separate from checking the legal minimum wage. Use the underlying occupation and region that best match the actual vacancy, and note the report date and measurement shown.

Resolve the title mismatch

List the vacancy’s main duties, seniority, qualifications and location before selecting a comparison. Keep a note explaining why the occupation is relevant. Compare a remote role with the employer’s stated pay location where available rather than assuming your home address determines the range. Record uncertainty when the posting combines duties from different occupations.

Put offers on the same basis

Separate hourly or annual base pay, expected hours, overtime treatment, bonus and benefits. Note whether a range includes variable pay and whether a figure is gross. Avoid turning an annual amount into an hourly comparison using an invented workweek. A larger total can include costs or unstable components that a base salary does not.

Use research to ask a precise question

Ask the recruiter which pay components and location apply and whether the proposed range has flexibility. Keep the report and written answer with the vacancy. Use your budget separately when deciding whether the offer works for you. The guide cannot establish that a lower-than-reported offer is unlawful or guarantee a negotiation result.

Hypothetical illustration: compare base pay separately

One offer states base pay plus a conditional bonus; another states a larger total including commission. Put each component on a separate line and mark whether it is guaranteed, conditional or not yet explained. Confirm actual hours and the applicable pay location before converting an annual amount to hourly pay. Ask: “What is the guaranteed base amount, what conditions govern variable pay and which work schedule is assumed?” A headline total and a regional wage report cannot answer those questions by themselves.

Keep records for your own decision

Save the vacancy posting, the wage report you used, and any written answers from the employer. These records help you compare offers and prepare for a conversation about salary. Do not share confidential company information or customer data in your personal notes. The wage report is a research tool, not a promise of what any employer will pay.
