Losing work does not identify one benefit

GOV.UK’s looking-for-work benefit directory includes Universal Credit and Jobseeker’s Allowance routes and benefit-checking resources. Each has its own conditions. Employment ending does not automatically qualify someone for every payment, and different parts of the UK can have different administration. Use the directory to identify a candidate scheme, then assess its current eligibility rather than assume an employer’s redundancy label settles it.

Gather the relevant dates and finances

Record the last working day, employment end, final-pay date and any notice or settlement payment. List household income, savings and existing support accurately, including a partner where relevant. Keep the amounts and periods each payment covers. Do not describe all final-pay items as redundancy money or omit money because it arrived after your last shift.

Prepare for the selected application

Check the scheme’s requested identity, employment and contribution information and use the official verified channel. A benefit calculator can help you explore eligibility but is not an award decision. Keep your calculation inputs and the actual application confirmation separately. If facts change, such as starting part-time work, check how and when the scheme requires you to report them.

If a decision or delay needs review

Keep the decision, reason, requested evidence and response dates. Ask the administering body about the applicable correction, reconsideration or appeal process and time limit. Continue to report facts accurately while seeking advice. This preparation guide does not promise an amount or suggest resigning to obtain support; the reason work ended can itself be relevant to a scheme’s assessment.

Example: separate final-pay items before applying

Hypothetical illustration: one bank transfer contains ordinary wages, unused-holiday pay and a separately identified redundancy amount. Record each line and its payment date instead of entering the entire transfer under one label. Ask the chosen scheme how each category and household savings are treated and what documents establish them. A payslip breakdown helps answer the application accurately; this example does not assign benefit eligibility or a payment amount.

Get help with the specific application or decision

If you cannot identify the right scheme, bring the employment-ending dates, final-pay breakdown, household facts and existing benefit records for benefit advice. If a decision has already been made, bring that decision and ask about its specific review route and deadline. Keep an application delay separate from a refusal. Ask what information is missing rather than submitting repeated applications or assuming an estimate is an award.
